How Big of a Freezer Do I Need for a Whole Beef?

  • Chest Freezers: A minimum of 20 cubic feet (ft³). This provides ample space for a whole cow plus some extra room for other items like vegetables and ice packs.
  • Upright Freezers: Aim for 28-32 cubic feet (ft³) to accommodate the whole beef while allowing for easier organization. Shelves take up space, so the extra capacity helps.
  • Fridge/Freezer Combos: Not a viable option for a whole cow. Consider investing in a dedicated chest or upright freezer to ensure proper storage. Your savings will easily cover the cost of a freezer.

What are the benefits of buying a half or whole beef?

    • Better value per pound compared to buying retail cuts.
    • Customizable to fit your family’s needs.
    • Stock up once and enjoy high-quality, pasture-raised beef all year.
    • Support regenerative farming and know exactly where your beef comes from.

    What does it cost?

Cows vary in size and all yields are estimates, so an exact price is impossible to know before harvest. The table below shows example yields and costs to expect.

How does this compare to buying the same amount of Beef individually?

This amount would total approximately $2,655 if purchased individually and picked up at Rucker Farm. An average yield ½ Beef offers a 10-15% savings!
